Welcome!

Dear prospective student, Nice that you chose to study the BSc Econometrics and Operations Research (EOR) or BSc Econometrics and Data Science (EDS) at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Welcome! Going from high school to university is an exciting step for various reasons. You are about to meet a lot of new people, you might have to find your way in a new city, and on top of that you are going to study at a university - probably for the first time. Everything is new and it takes time to find out how everything works. We intend to help you with that. One way to do so is by offering you this online preparation website. Students typically perceive the mathematics and statistics courses in the first year of the bachelors EOR and EDS as very challenging. They consist of many new (abstract) concepts that you did not encounter in high school yet. Therefore, it helps a lot to have a strong base when you start your study.

The material on this website is meant for you to test your current level of mathematics, by practicing exercises on a variety of topics that have been carefully selected. They are drawn from and based on the book Essential Mathematics for Economic Analysis, which is a recommended source if you want to prepare well for this study. It does not only have a wealth of contents on various important topics; it also comes with many exercises (including solutions). This makes it very suitable for self-study. Please note that we do not offer support. Since this is the first version of this preparation material, typos are almost surely present. In case you have spotted a typo, please send an e-mail to management.bsceoreds.sbe@vu.nl. We hope you have a good time preparing for your future study! You can find out more about the study programmes at the VU study guide. We are looking forward to welcoming you in September!

Best regards,

Programme management BSc EOR & EDS Arantza Estévez-Fernández, Ronald de Vlaming and Sean Telg

The summer preparation program launched for the first time in 2022 as part of a Comenius Teaching Grant. We want to thank the (former) students Francesco Cavina, Just de Groot and Marcello de Wit for their contributions in setting it up.
